Video of Zigzag Heron at the Napo Wildlife Center
This is a short and compressed video taken on the
entrance stream to the Napo Wildlife Center. |
The Napo Wildlife Center Reserve has the world's largest and most reliable population of Zigzag Herons, and guests occasionally see as many as six in one day. This species is probably the most enigmatic heron species in South America. It appears to spend the day hunting for food back in the forest, but comes to the edge of streams to roost at night and also to build nests during the breeding season. Because of their secretive nature, Zigzag Herons are rarely seen during the day and are most often sighted at dusk along the creeks. This video was taken of an adult on its nest. |
