This is the ideal place if you are looking forward doing a birding tour in the Amazon Rainforest. Here below we present you the most common birds you will observe all around at the NWC.
The hoatzin is one of the strangest birds of the Amazon in Ecuador. It is said that it has a prehistoric look because of its particular wing claws. It measures approximately 70 cm long, its face lacks of feathers and it has a peak fan-shaped upright. It is a colorful bird and it is very noisy.
The hoatzin eats leaves and fruits that it founds from the marshes where it lives. One of the many peculiarities of this bird is that it has a digestive system as cows and other ruminants, for this reason the hoatzin is also known as stinky bird.
The Mealy Amazon is considered one of the largest parrots in America. It has a short and almost square tail. The Mealy Amazon is mainly green. It is a sociable bird that can be found in pairs or large flocks. They also interact with other parrots such as macaws.
They are usually quiet but can be loud at dusk and dawn. This bird feeds on fruits, berries and seeds. It is a relatively common bird to see in the jungle, especially in the parrot clay clicks you will visit during the birding tour in the Amazon organized by NWC guides.
Macaws are adorable and intelligent birds. They are easily recognized for their colorful plumage and for having deep and loud harsh calls.
You can find hundreds of macaws in the clay banks in the Amazon Rainforest. They concentrate here to feed on minerals that help these birds to process the toxins found in the seeds they feed with.
Among all birds found in the Amazon the toucan is probably the most representative figure. It is a true icon of the jungle. It is easily identifiable by its long and colorful beak that can reach up to 19 cm long. Its color ranges from yellow-orange to red-orange.
The toucan’s body is black and its plumage is very colorful. It has white chest and neck and some blue feathers around the eyes. Its tongue is flat and almost as long as its peak.
These are just some of the most common bird species you will see when during the birding tour in the Amazon, but there are more than 200 species registered in the Yasuni National Park, so be prepared to take some pictures and videos and live a real wildlife experience in the jungle.
